JORHAT SHARE AUTO MAP

DATA VISUALIZATION

The aim of this project was to map the interconnected shared auto lines lying along the various points of interest within Jorhat town and their respective fares, so as to be converted into a map/guide for the same.

A collective effort of Rohan Sunny, Sandeep Xavier & Marudev Singh Nathawat.

Owing to the size of Jorhat town’s roads and a limited network of the same within town, autorickshaws are the most prominent mode of public transport. This includes the normal autorickshaws, minivans labelled “Magic” after the name of the vehicle, Maximos and a type of autorickshaw named “Vikram”. These run on a share system for a minimum fare of 20 rupees, along preset routes through many parts of town and beyond. Any deviation from these routes/lines requires passengers to pay a significantly larger amount to “reserve” or hire the vehicle.

This poses a problem for any person who may not be familiar with the town or this particular system of routes. The unfamiliarity, lack of awareness and language barriers lead to them paying extra money for hired rates, the routes of which could be covered for much less.

Jorhat is one of Assam’s important cities and a growing urban centre. And so, being the base of various educational institutions such as Jorhat Medical College (and hospital), Jorhat Engineering college, Assam Agriculture University, National Insitute of Design Assam, among others, as well as a tea research institute and other attractions such as a Wildlife sanctuary, Jorhat receives people of different ages from different parts of India, who visit for both short and long term purposes, which would include a certain amount of travelling.

The impact of COVID-19 on income and the steep hike in fuel prices have caused auto drivers to demand much higher prices for hire and are very adamant on the same. In this situation, passengers require knowledge of the existing and essential auto routes which house their points of interest, as well as the knowledge of the amount of money it takes to travel along them, so as to avoid paying an unfair amount of money for the same.

The following prototype demonstrates how this idea can be easily translated into the form of an App, making the map much more convenient to use.
